With our gear ready, we began our dive. The water was freezing cold and the challenge of diving and staying in position for the photo was considerable. The darkness of the cenote added a level of awesomeness and nervousness, but also a sense of excitement and anticipation.
Imagine immersing yourself in a hidden world, where sunlight filters through the depths of a cenote, creating a spectacle of golden rays that illuminate the crystal-clear water . This was the scenario that led me to embark on one of the most exciting and challenging adventures of my life: capturing the essence of a cenote in an underwater photograph.
It all started when I saw a series of stunning photographs taken in a cenote. The clarity of the water and the play of light left me in awe, and I knew immediately that I had to experience and capture something similar. My research took me to Valladolid, to a cenote called Chukum , known for its beauty and the magical light that filters through only during the summer.
Before venturing into the cenote, there was a lot to prepare for. Underwater photography is no easy task; it requires not only the right equipment but also specific skills. I hired a freediving instructor to ensure I had the necessary permits and safety during the shoot. I also had the help of my friend and specialized photographer, Miguel Guillermo, who provided his experience and professional equipment.
We headed to the cenote early in the morning, after spending the night in Valladolid. The light in the cenote is crucial , as only in summer and during certain hours of the day do the perfect sun rays form for photography. The first time we attempted the session was a failure due to the lack of proper light, but this only increased my determination.
After several attempts, tired and shivering from the cold, we headed to a nearby restaurant to review the photos. The emotion was indescribable when we saw that we had captured the image I had dreamed of so much. That photograph not only represented a beautiful moment but also the effort and dedication put into achieving it.
For this session, we used a Sony A7 camera with a special housing for underwater photography. In addition, we carried DeepSea Blue Fin goggles and the Dry Bag where we kept all our things without fear of water leaking in. We also had specialized fins and wetsuits to protect us from the cold. All the equipment was crucial to ensure quality and safety during the session.
If you're thinking about having a similar experience, my biggest piece of advice is to do it with a freediving expert. Safety is paramount on these adventures , and having the guidance of someone experienced can make all the difference. I also recommend practicing freediving beforehand and making sure you have the right equipment.
